About the challenge
At the heart of the hackathon is a real-world challenge: how can predictive maintenance and smarter building operations improve performance, usability, and long-term value of properties?
Participants will work with real operational and building-related data to develop solutions that may address topics such as proactive maintenance, optimized building operations, improved indoor conditions, better space utilization, or enhanced rentability. The challenge is intentionally open-ended. Not all data will be provided upfront, and teams are expected to explore, question, and design their own approaches — whether that results in a prototype, analysis, concept, or business model.
Who can participate?
The hackathon is open to students, early-stage startups, independent innovators, and multidisciplinary teams. Participants may come from backgrounds such as technology, data science, engineering, design, business, sustainability, or real estate — but no specific profile is required.
What matters most is curiosity and interest in solving real problems with data. Diverse teams and perspectives are strongly encouraged.
Why join?
By joining the Luotea Hackathon, participants gain hands-on experience working with real industry data and concrete challenges from the built environment. Throughout the weekend, teams will be supported by expert mentors and industry specialists who provide sparring on technical, business, and conceptual questions.
The event is also an opportunity to learn new skills, test ideas in practice, and build meaningful connections with companies, researchers, and fellow innovators. The best solutions will be rewarded with a cash prize, with details announced closer to the event.
Support and mentoring
Participants are not expected to work alone. Expert mentors will be available both on-site and remotely throughout the hackathon. Teams will also receive pre-event materials and datasets to help them prepare and hit the ground running once the event begins.
